Comic #826: MISTER HANDSOME [16 May 2008|12:00am]
theaterhopper
The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian, Aslan, Christ allegory, Senior Guapo, sock puppet

I know that the punchline to today's comic is really random. Sorry about that. I just had a lot of trouble coming up with an idea to spoof The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I didn't read C.S. Lewis's books growing up and I don't have much interest in seeing the movies. I'm just burnt out on all of these fantasy movies with kids who must Save The World!

The genesis of this comic was born out of something actual, though. A friend and I went to see Iron Man last week and there was a trailer for Prince Caspian ahead of it. He made a comment to the effect that it was weird to see Aslan so prominently in the trailer because he's supposed to be dead in the second book. I thought this sound like a good jumping off point. Truthfully, I just wanted to use the line "You can't keep a good Christ allegory down." Maybe I should have used that for the punchline. Instead I decided to make it weird.

I actually had to do a little bit of research on this one because I wanted to make sure what I was referencing was factual. So of course I checked Wikipedia - The Source For All Things TruthfulTM and consulted friends through LiveJournal. I think I gave myself a little wiggle room by framing the question inside Jared's confusion.

I felt the need to be proactive about getting my facts straight because the last time I mouthed off about one of these "beloved" childhood fantasy novels turned into a live action movie, I got my head bit off. People take this stuff pretty seriously.

Then again, who am I to judge. Look how serious I take Iron Man...

Even though I know the comic is ridiculous, I would kind of like to keep Señor Guapo around - and yes, I realized that I spelled his name wrong in the comic. Sorry, I was up late finishing it. I'll fix it when I get home.

Anyway.... Señor Guapo. Would you like to see more comics that feature him? I have a couple ideas that he might be useful for. E-mail me and tell me what you think.

I feel a little distracted lately. There's a good reason for it. My dad is going in for open-heart surgery on Tuesday. He's not having a bypass or anything like that. They're going in to fix a prolapsed mitral valve. Basically, one of the valves in his heart is weakened and is letting blood that's supposed to be pumped out seep back into the chambers of his heart. Now his heart has to work twice as hard to do its job. Eventually it would just tire out, so the surgery is mandatory.

I'm a little weirded out by the idea of my Dad having a surgery like this. I won't get into details, but it's highly invasive. He had Cami and I watch a video from the hospital letting us know what to expect. I'm not sure if it helped to prepare me or made things worse.

Anyway, I'll be out of town next week to be with my Dad as he undergoes surgery. As such, there will be no new comics from me next week. Joe, Gordon and I also decided to take a week off, so there will also be no new episode of The Triple Feature.

I encourage you to continue visiting the site, though. I have a couple of great guest strips lined up. A couple of my friends from Boxcar Comics are stepping in to lend a hand. Who are they? You'll just have to come back next week to find out!

So that's what's going on in my world right now. We're confident about the surgery, but we're worried about my Dad's recovery. He's a young guy, so he has that going for him. But 6 to 8 weeks of doing nothing is going to be difficult for him to manage. I appreciate your patience and understanding while I deal with this family health issue.

Take care of yourselves and I will be in touch soon. Have a great weekend!

The Banned List [16 May 2008|01:36am]

I've been listening to Radiohead's "Videotape" from In Rainbows over and over again.

This is not something to be listening to four days before my Dad has open heart surgery.

I should probably stay away from Radiohead altogether for the next few weeks.

So I wrote some Mylar for the challenge going on right now at [info]mylar_fic.
It is entitled: "It lasts for always."
It was written for the prompt "Something permanent, something dark."
It is, in fact, rated R.
It is based on the 5 years gone universe.
I was not ever expecting to write Mylar again, let alone TODAY when I was supposed to be studying for finals.
Oh yeah, and NBC & Timmy own Heroes. Not I.

Read it HERE.

There will be several votes going for the May prompts bring June faster ficathon thing. One for each prompt and then one for each category. So keep watching the comm & even if you don't participate please PLEASE vote :D

Stress? Fuck it. [15 May 2008|10:14pm]

tombrazelton
I had a really stressful afternoon when I came home today. I was going to write this big long post about it. The kind of post that Mitch Clem would read and then comment how I take things so seriously.

Basically what happened is that we got a very aggressively worded but very vague letter in the mail saying that we owed some collection agency $59. It didn't say why. I thought it was a scam. I tried looking it up on the internet, but to no avail. So I called the 800 number on the back and was pretty much abused by the biggest asshole on Earth.

Long story short, I guess we ordered delivery from Pizza Hut back in January and the check bounced. I thought I had overdraft protection, but I found out later after calling my bank that they only cover checks of a certain amount and they didn't cover this one. Pizza Hut sent the check to collections. I never got the two notices that they sent - or at least didn't know what the referenced - and eventually it got to this FINAL NOTICE stage.

I could go into more detail, but it's just going to make me mad again. Fuck it. That loser is stuck in a collections agency. I'm pretty sure I'm doing a little bit better than he is.

The point of the story is that I was stressed, right? Okay, so we have the collections asshole and then stuff starts piling up. Henry's crying, Truman is killing rabbits again in the backyard. All of this shit is hitting the fan at once.

Things settle down a little bit and all of us go into the family room to watch an episode of Sesame Street Cami TiVo'd. Mellows everyone right out.

All of a sudden, I see this little towheaded kid in our backyard. I turn to Cami, "Did you see that?"

"See what?" she asked.

"There was some kid in our backyard!"

So now I'm all unsettled again because if the neighbor kids are coming in our backyard, there's a good chance they're leaving the gate wide open. And if they leave the gate wide open, then Truman could get loose the next time we let him out to take a piss. That happened at our last house and it was not a fun time.

So I go into the backyard to make sure the gate is closed.

No sooner do I turn the corner around the house, but I see little hands closing the fence gate behind them.

FUCKERS!

Okay, fine. They were in the yard. They didn't break anything. Whatever. I'm kind of pissed, but I'm letting it go.

A half hour later we put Henry down to bed. I come downstairs to grab something Henry needs before going to bed and I look out our sliding glass door to see TWO kids standing in the middle of our yard! One of them is handling a toy Henry left out there earlier. The other one is pointing to our back fence like he's surveying the land.

Strike two.

I throw open the sliding glass door and shout to them, "Can I help you boys with something?!"

They whip their tiny heads around and are now frozen in fear.

"Did you lose something back here? A toy, or something? What are you doing back here?"

No response.

"If you two are coming back here, we're going to have a problem. Because if you leave my gate open, there's a good chance my dog is going to get loose. So unless you want me to wake you up at 10 o'clock at night so you can help me find him, you don't have any business being back here."

"We were just looking around," one of them said sheepishly.

"Well, guess what? This isn't your yard and there's nothing here for you to see. The next time I catch you back here, I'm telling your parents."

They slinked back toward the gate and closed the gate door behind them.

...

I take no great pleasure terrifying children. I know it was just youthful curiosity that led them into my backyard. The neighbors just built this new swingset/fort contraption and now they have a clear line of sight into our backyard anyway. So why not take the next step and wander around a bit?

But for these two, it was a case of wrong place wrong time. If I had been a little less stressed out, I might have played it for laughs. But as it was, I wanted to wring their necks.

I've had a run in with these two in the past. Last summer they were throwing shit over the fence into the yard while I was mowing. The fact of the matter is that these parents don't watch over them at all. I almost hit one of them backing out of the garage before Henry was born. The parents were sitting out in their driveway in lawn chairs drinking beer when it happened. They gave me this half-hearted wave as if to say, "Thanks for not killing him!" I almost had a stroke.

Anyway. I'm less stressed now and I think it's kind of funny to tell the story. But, yeah. When my blood was up earlier, it was a bad scene.

Nature shrugs her shoulders [15 May 2008|06:17pm]

bjorkish

[jmmva]
Does anyone have that quote of Bjork, where she's talking about how people think we're so great and have it all together, but really Nature just shrugs her shoulders and deals with us, and puts us all in our place?  She said something about that once, because she's from Iceland, and how Nature can kill.

I was trying to find it on the internet, but I wasn't quite sure where to search, really.  googling: bjork, nature, shrugs, deals?  anyone have a better idea?

I just have been thinking a lot about this lately.  The earthquake in China.  The Olympics quickly approaching.  Bjork whispering "Tibet" and then Tibet uprises, and then you have this massive earthquake which comes from out of nowhere, killing so many people, no reason.  And wasn't the epicenter close to Tibet?  It's like Nature saying "take it down a notch, you're all lucky to even be alive!"

I know it seems like a bit of a stretch, and I'm not that much of a mystic, normally.  And I'm not really saying I believe it was Bjork's foot-stomping, earth-intruders song which started the foreshadowing of the earthquake (s) to come, that would be way too wacky to presume.

But it is a bit ironic that China is trying its best to just put its best face forward and make itself seem so "together" and perfect for its international guests, for the Olympics.  And then this happens.  This really heavy blow, in their backyard.  It just seems like too much, NOT to notice some connection there.  And yet, there is no reason.  Nature just does what it does, regardless of who's made their nests on her crust.

It also sort of reminds me of that crazy cartoon God-like figure in Wanderlust who's digging the trenches for the rivers, and laughing at her as she goes off the edge of the waterfall.  Like "take that! ...I decide, not you."
